Honoring Our Service Men and Women

May 28th, 2009 by calledout

Hey guys! Hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend. Got to pause a moment and thank all of our veterans and active duty military men and women for their service to our great country. Also want to thank all the wives and husbands who gave up time with their spouses…the parents who gave up time with their kids…and the kids who waved good-bye to mom or dad as the departed for weeks, months, sometimes years at a time. I sit here in the shade of a tree by a softball field…it’s peaceful and safe, and all of this is possible thanks to a marine, a soldier, an airman, or a sailor who gave their time and some ultimately their life so we can enjoy this incredible freedom we enjoy. Thanks just doesn’t quite seem enough, but it sure is a good start.

Been a couple of weeks since I last talked with you all…life’s been good. The guys are all healthy and summer has descended upon middle Tennessee which has made all the kids smile. Schools out and with the passing of a school year comes the anticipation of late nights and even later mornings. My daughter in particular enjoys the fact that she gets to skip breakfast…not because she isn’t hungry, but because technically when you wake up at noon I think you call that first meal “lunch”. As the weather warms, so does our schedule heat up a bit. A couple weeks back we got to visit our dear friends at Southside Missionary Baptist in Indianapolis, IN. Always a great trip as we get to hang out with all the former members of the singing group The Patterson Family. You guys have heard this story, but it bears repeating. My first real taste of Southern Gospel music came not from the radio, or a CD of the Cathedrals or Gold City….nope, it came from homecoming at my church where the Patterson Family came year after year. They’ve since retired from the road, but you can always count on a makeshift version coming together at homecoming, and this year was no exception. In fact, this year in particular they made it happen because Southside was celebrating its 50th year in existence as a church. Awesome stuff. At one point during the service they asked folks who were saved either at the church or under her influence to stand up…and people were standing all over. What an impact our churches have in families and communities as the years scroll on by.

This past weekend was a particularly special one for me and my family as we headed over to an area not far from home… to Algood, TN…just outside of the greater Cookeville, TN area (home of Tennessee Tech). Why special? Well…it’s close to my Granny Cherry’s original home…and I say “close” because her technical “home” is now several feet under water at Dale Hollow Lake. She grew up in Willow Grove, TN and that area was annexed by the Army Corps of Engineers to create the now gorgeous reservoir used by fishermen and water sports enthusiasts from many states. Paran United Methodist was the place and one of Granny’s nieces helped get us booked. By the time the meal was served for their homecoming gala, we had well over a dozen friends and family mosey on over to hear Granny’s grandson. Here’s the sad thing…we were there but they didn’t get to “hear” me. Why not? Infernal allergies strike again! Not sure what the deal was, but about half way into the service my voice was gone. Became a bit entertaining just to see (or better hear) what was going to come from my mouth. Squeaks and silence seemed to dominate the afternoon. One super beneficial thing was it was Marty’s first weekend as our “occasional” piano guy. His awesome work on the keys helped to make up for my shortcomings at the mic…plus, Marty is a huge UK basketball fan as is my Granny, so he diverted her attention away from the trouble at hand to the promise of green pastures up in bluegrass country with the new coach. Hated it happened for the church folks, but…as my lovely bride has reminded me many times in the last few days as I lamented…whatever the reason for it, the whole thing was in the Lord’s will and there was a plan and a purpose. Personal note from me: I’m hoping the Lord’s purpose was met and I don’t have to face that humiliation anytime again real soon!  :)

Got a weekend off to prepare for our extended trip to New England the following week. Plan to make use by spending lots of quality family time to make up for the time away. Been adding several dates to the schedule, so be sure and check them out when you get a chance. Getting ready to start working on a new CD very soon to…so look for more detail on that soon as well. Firming up those plans for the homecoming/reunion of the quartet this summer, and like I said…late July or August looks like the target right now. Trying to confirm all our boys will be here. The early plan is to start back to the way it all started with those early “pre-CD” songs we sang at church and work our way up to where we are today. Should be entirely too much fun reminiscing over the last 6 years. Hope you all can be there for what should be an incredible night for us…stay tuned.

Have a great weekend and we’ll talk again before we get gone. Maybe I can find time to update here and there from the road. I can already taste the lobster roll now! Should be a fun trip…and speaking of fun trips….don‘t forget Gatlinburg in November. Our previous times have been nothing short of awesome and I fully suspect this year will be no different. Can’t think of anything else super pressing…so you guys all take care and we’ll talk soon.

Got some catching up to do!

May 14th, 2009 by calledout

Well folks…guess you thought we (or better, I) fell off the face of the earth. Sorry! Life’s been busy and the longer I go without an update, the longer it’s going to take. Sitting here now at my daughter’s softball practice…got the windows down enjoying the comfortable breeze off Nashville’s Cumberland River. I would enjoy it even more if I would quit this infernal sneezing, but it’s just an allergy transition time I guess. Thanks to Deb, I (and we) are fully stocked with some awesome allergy meds. Don’t know what we’d do without you Deb!

We’ve had a few singings since last we talked and they’ve all been good. I don’t have any internet access right here in my Jeep or I’d check…but I believe I haven’t talked about the weekend in Indianapolis…so I’ll start there. First I guess I should mention we had a great time at this year’s Missionary Baptist conference in Murfreesboro, TN. Got to sing with our friends the Victory Quartet and folks from the Do Re Me Gospel Music Academy. Poor Eric lost his voice Friday night and spent Saturday morning struggling through songs and then the afternoon in the doctor’s office…then that night sleeping in the van on the way to Indiana. I have introduced you all to Eric…..right? You know….Eric Melton…our new baritone. Hoping to get some new pics made soon so you can all meet him officially on our website and add his page for all his details. Eric is doing much better now…which is a gift from the good Lord.

After Friday night and Saturday morning in Murfreesboro, we headed back home so Jess could enjoy his son Carter’s birthday bash, then we launched later for Indy. Rolled into Franklin around 1:00am (which really isn’t all that bad considering trips we have made). Got to Faith Missionary Baptist Sunday morning…but not after we made a jaunt to Wal-Mart to find some dress shoes for Eric. Welcome to the “stuff I’ve left behind” club in the quartet….I think we have purchased everything from shoes to suits on the road (yes…a full blown suit), so he should now fit right in. Enjoyed the day at Faith and got home at a reasonable hour…which was good for Eric’s sickness.

The next weekend had us venturing into Georgia…Winder (pronounced like “grinder” instead of like “wind”…as in breezy) Saturday night and Douglas Sunday morning. Winder was right on the way, just outside of Atlanta…which was great. Appreciate Raymond Church for hooking us up with the stop. Sunday morning had us at People’s Baptist Church in Douglas, which is an area we had been to before as we sang at the Kirkland’s Homecoming a couple of years back. Nice thing was that Douglas was close enough to Florida for us to see palm trees all over…just a taste of the beach is better than nothing at all! Had a great day there and actually got to sing first and eat second….which is awesome. Don’t have to pace yourself so you can sing….just load up and throw caution to the wind. The drive home was eventful in some ways…drove through tornado warnings, hail, and a plethora of rain…what I’m trying to say is we saw some mighty fierce weather. Good Lord kept us safe as we drove past cars and trucks scattered all over the road everywhere.

This past weekend we were off for Mother’s Day…by the way, happy belated Mother’s Day to all our moms and “road” moms who care for us week in and week out. While I’m at it….happy belated Cinco De Mayo for all those (like myself) who had to celebrate Mexico’s freedom by downing a chicken burrito (at Baja of course). Oh….and happy belated birthday to my wife Lisa (May 12th) and I think we have already mentioned Carter’s a couple weeks back. Tonight (May 13th) is Eddie Crook’s daughter’s birthday…so happy birthday to you Cyndi!

Got some great dates coming up soon…Southside in Indianapolis this weekend and Paran Methodist Church in Algood, TN (near Cookeville) the following weekend. Paran will be loaded with my family as my Granny has invited everyone within 100 miles (and some further) to come “home” to Cookeville to see us. My Granny grew up in Willow Grove, TN, which became part of the now picturesque Dale Hollow Lake. She moved (along with the rest of her family) to Cookeville and most stayed. My Granny migrated to Nashville when my mom was young…but most of the rest can still be found in that area. So….they are all coming out to hear us…let’s just pray that good ol’ allergy medication takes hold soon and I don’t sound like an old crow for all my kinfolk.

After Paran we head up to New England for a few days….can not WAIT to make that trip. Should be entirely too much fun just like last time. Doug Scalise at Brewster Baptist and I have been chatting about baseball lately…will look forward to getting to sit down and talk in person and see all the wonderful sights again on “the cape”. Oh…and how about this…looks like Marty will be joining us as our piano player for this trip…and maybe a few more. Stay tuned….

One other thing brewing right now is Called Out Quartet’s Homecoming….likely to be in early August or late July. Will have more details later, but the “plan” right now is to have everyone who can be there who has been in the group to be there and then go through all the iterations of the group from it’s inception 5 years ago. That hopefully will include (conflicts not withstanding) Marty Harris, Darrell Collier, and Ron Bowman… perhaps Scott Godsey (our temp for last fall) and maybe even Eddie Crook himself. The rest of us “current” guys will be there too….Jess, Scott, Eric, and me (Von). Should be a whale of a night….probably a Saturday evening, and will probably be a long one. Hope everyone can make plans to be there once the details and the guests are firmed up.

Also getting things cemented for the third annual Gatlinburg trip…another big time for all (especially us). Same place as before…The Riverside Motor Lodge, same group as before (us….had to throw that in)…and hoping to confirm same guest as before (The Smith Family). More on all that soon. Scott has a nice info page up on the site…check it out and make plans to attend!

Real quick…talked to a dear old friend of the quartet this past week, Norman Martin up in Grayville, IL. His son Bill (pastor at Keeler Baptist in Keeler, MI) is still trying to recover from another bout with Leukemia…he could sure use your prayers if you think about it. While you’re there, toss one up for Norman and the rest of his crew.

The sunset’s glow is telling me that softball practice has almost wrapped up…will have to wrap this up soon as well. My thought this week…enjoy life. Enjoy each day, and to quote the Little River Band from my childhood…”take time to make time, make time to be there”. Whatever you are going through, it won’t last forever…good or bad, it’s all going to change. Take an extra moment to hang with the kids or grandkids…grab your spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend and watch a sappy, happy, fun movie and laugh ‘til it hurts. Some of the best times Lisa and I share are when we sit down together and watch some of our favorite TV shows…relaxing and enjoying our company for a while. Don’t wish things away…they will be over before you know it and you’ll be wondering where the time went. God bless and have a great week…will try (once again) to do better with my updates, but sometimes life calls. You all know where to find us….just check the schedule and see us or (like some have done) shoot us an email and we’ll gladly talk.

Von, Jess, Scott, and Eric
